SAVING ENDANGERED DUGONGS OF THE WESTERN INDIAN OCEAN

BAZARUTO ARCHIPELAGO COMMUNITY EDUCATION PROGRAMME
We believe that one of the key solutions to the conservation challenges facing dugongs in the Bazaruto Archipelago lies in the development of a conservation awareness in the communities youth. In our "OBSERVE, PRESERVE & CONSERVE" education initiative we aim to foster stewardship of the marine environment through interactive education programmes in local schools. Awareness that we believe will immediately extend beyond learners to their families and communities, and in the longer term will provide tomorrow's leaders with an understanding of conservation and sustainability.

We plan to work with schoolchildren from within the mainland and the island communities in the Bazaruto Archipelago region. Using dugongs as a conservation flagship species provides both a community custodianship of dugongs and a broader conservation understanding of the marine environment across whales, turtles, dolphins, sharks and fisheries.
